Nature vrs Nurture Essay Nature VS Nurture: Nature and NurtureJames Hoggs classic novel, The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner, portrays the fictional story of Robert Wringhim, a strong Calvinist who justifies murder by quickening the inevitable. Robert commits infamous acts of evil, believing that these murderous actions glorify God by annihilating sinners not chosen to be saved. I believe that a combination of factors involving both nurture and nature shape Wringhim into the suffering creature that he becomes. The greatest of these factors include Paranoia Schizophrenia, Multiple Personality Disorder, and the rejection of society. To my limited medical knowledge, I understand Wringhim to suffer from a severe case of Paranoia Schizophrenia among other forms of mental illnesses. There is evidence for this theory in the novel. For example, it is typical for victims of this medical condition to have an immense fear that literally controls their life. In the early pages of the book, Wringhim discusses this paranoid fear which consumes his life. My heart quakes with terror, when I thought of being still living in a state of reprobation, subjected to the awful issues of death, judgment, and eternal misery( Hobbes 118). This fear of death, judgment and eternal misery controls him and becomes all he thinks about. He goes on to describe that he prays three times a day and seven times on the Sabbath to cope with this fear of damnation. However, even though Wringhim is obsessed with the security of his salvation earlier in the novel, this fear appears to diminish by an overwhelming sense of security that he is elected to be saved from the eternal flames fire, after his father bargains with God for Roberts soul (130). Although there is little evidence to support this theory, it is not unintelligent for one to believe that Wringhims original fear of eternal damnation persists throughout his lifetime, even after he realizes he is one of the elect. Page 153 shows Robert struggling with the question of whether he is truly elect or not.This shows that his paranoid fear still persists. After examining Wringhims murderous actions and the mental state he was possibly in, it can be concluded that Wringhim murders the enemies of the Lord because it helps him get over his fear of damnation. On Page 136, Robert first understands that his calling is not to be a minister but a champion. He wishes to be a champion for God, cutting down sinners by the sword. However, I feel that he subconsciously desires to be a champion over his own fear of damnation and through believing that murdering the damned is Gods calling for his life, this allows the means to defeat his fear. Another mental illness that is shown in Robert Wringhims life is Multiple Personality Disorder. Psychologists are still trying to understand what causes MPD. There is much debate whether this mental condition is caused through nature or through nurture: I believe, like many psychologists, that its a combination of both. In this belief, MPD victims recall one specific event thats so traumatic that their mind escapes insanity by blocking out the event and taking on a new identity (or identities). Its a form of the minds self defense which allows a victim to go on living their life without reflecting on harrowing experiences that would result in madness for the victim. The reason why this disorder is believed to also be caused by nature is because it helps explain why people who suffer the same or similar traumatic experiences as MPD victims, On page 170, Robert becomes aware that he looses all track of time. This is very common for MPD victims. The minds will check in and out of time w henever it feels a need for safety; the mind still functions, it just takes on the form of a new personality. The most convincing evidence for the argument of Robert Wringhim having Multiple Personality Disorder is the fact that he feels another personality inside of his own body. I generally conceived myself to be two people. When I lay in bed, I deemed there were two of un in it; when I sat up, I always beheld another person (158). He describes in great detail about his feeling of another personality inside of himself. He even mentions that there could be more than one other personality inside of him. It not mattered how many or how few were present: this, my second self, was sure to be present in his place (159). After examining the evidence for Robert Wringhim being diagnosed with Multiple Personality Disorder, the question is no longer if he has the mental condition but what could be the traumatic experience that drove Wringhims mind to MPD. I believe there can only be one explanation for this. Societys rejection of Robert traumatized him so severely that his mind is forced to take on other personalities. Wringhim is described as a very lonely individual through out the entire book. His father rejected him when he was very young and his mother loved his brother more than him. He had no friends besides his mysterious companion (if he can even be called a friend because he only used Robert to do evil) who was merely a hallucinated figment of his imagination. I was born an outcast in the world in which I was destined to act so conspicuous a part(117). In Merry Shellys classical novel, Frankenstein, the monster is rejected by society and goes on to cause great evil even though his heart longed to do good. The monsters own creator rejected his creation leaving the monster with an immense feeling of misery. Robert Wringhims and the monsters lives are very similar in the sense that those who should accept and love them were the first to reject them and then all of society followed forcing them to cause great evil to revenge their hurt. Revenge for society rejecting him could have been another factor that played in his decisions to murder. My life has been a life of trouble and turmoil; of change and vicissitude; of anger and exultation; of sorrow and of vengeance (117). Furthermore, it was not merely through nurture or nature that lead Robert Wringhim to commit these murders; it was the combination of both. Nature and nurture should not be classified into two separate categories or theories, because they have a correlating relationshi p and work off of each other. Hogg demonstrates this through Robert Wringhim using both nature (Paranoia Schizophrenia), nurture (rejection of society), and a mental disorder that combines both classifications (Multiple Personality Disorder). If I were to ask a group of people if they are for or against the death penalty sentence, I would most likely get strong assertive opinions on why or why not they believe in such a serious consequence. Some consider the death penalty inhumane, almost like the topic of abortion, many are against it, but to me, it is nothing like that. The death penalty, also known as capital punishment, is the legal process where a person is put to death by the state. The practice of execution by a society has been occurring since the late 1600’s. In 1622, in a Virginian Colony there was a small town village man, Daniell Frank, who was hanged for such a little crime as stealing a baby calf from a neighbor friend. As we know, it takes much more than just the robbery of a baby calf to be sentenced with the death penalty. Executions have declined as well, from a high of 98 in 1999, to just 37 in 2008; there were 46 executions in 2010, and 43 executions in 2011 and 2012. As we can tell that as time ticks, capital punishment is slowly decreasing. In Texas, the average costs of the process is $2.3 million, this is about three times the cost imprisoning someone in a single cell at the highest security level for 40 years, so as we can tell the death penalty process is not cheap. In the eighth amendment it says â€Å"Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted,† this is where it gets difficult. When people oppose of the eight amendment the only part that stands out is no cruel or unusual punishments. But what people don’t understand is that there is no pain when you are given capital punishment. To some, the death penalty is a symbol of justice, and it is a relief towards our safety concerns by establishing closure. Most states use a 3-drug combination for lethal injections: an anesthetic, either pentobarbital or, formerly, sodium thiopental (which is used to put to sleep), after a member of the team determines the inmate is sufficiently unconscious, he/she is then injected with pancuronium bromide, which paralyzes the entire muscle system and stops the inmate's breathing. In most cases, the inmate's consciousness is again checked, and finally potassium chloride stops his heart. In ideal circumstances, death results from anesthetic overdose and respiratory and cardiac arrest while the condemned person is unconscious. INTRODUCTION In recent history, evolving networks have been seen as a relevant and very popular area of resea rch among physicists. Reka Albert and Albert-Laszlo Barabasi introduced a concept of evolving networks that is based on preferential attachment, in order to understand the areas from which the ubiquity of scale-free distributions in real networks originates. This symbolizes Pearl’s constant curiousity and truth, and her knowing that the letter her mother must wear retricts her from being ‘loved by the sun’, in other words, Hester must remain in the dark about her feelings, while Pearl can stay in the sun. Again another example of Pearl’s free emotion, a symbolism of the Romanticism in the novel. Although Hester had so much trouble with Pearl, she still felt that Pearl was her treasure. Being alienated from society and without Dimmesdale to confess his part in the sin, Pearl was really the only thing that Hester had in life. Hester cherished Pearl’s existence, though she was born out of what Puritans considered a sin. Here, Pearl symbolizes a person that Hester can hold on to and call her own, when it seems as though she has nothing left in the world.

Stanza 1 The name ‘Garden of Love' almost appears hackneyed through its traditional, Edenic connotations. It is a representation of innocence, with green, open spaces often being associated with childhood in Blake's poetry. The speaker comments that they saw â€Å"what [they] never had seen†, which seems to imply that something material has changed external to themselves, namely the altered landscape that is subsequently detailed; however, this poem, in the context of the ‘Songs of Innocence and Experience', symbolises an internal fall from innocence, and it is therefore only the speaker's perspective that has changed. The Church is then introduced as the object of the poet's condemnation, represented through the synecdoche of the â€Å"Chapel†. It is built â€Å"in the midst†, implying that organised religion is central to the corruption that infected the zeitgeist of the late 18th century. Furthermore, the aural suggestion of ‘mist' subtly evokes a somewhat disquieting image of the Chapel being shrouded in vapour, which is often a symbol of materialism in Blake and could therefore imply a preoccupation with wealth in Christianity. This contrasts with the â€Å"green†, a representation of childhood, where the speaker used to â€Å"play†, a verb with similar connotations. Stanza 2 The gates of the chapel are said to be â€Å"shut†, suggesting that the religiosity of the Church is an exclusive privilege. Indeed, Blake was very critical of an institution which effectively heralds its clergy as closer to God than ordinary worshippers; in his eyes, every human is equal before the natural order. From 1922 to 1991, Russia represented the largest portion of the Soviet Union, and it dominated the coalition of Marxist proto-states. Through most the final half of the 20th century, the United States and the Soviet Union, also known as the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), were the principal actors in an epic battle, referred to as a Cold War, for global domination. This battle was, in the broadest sense, a struggle between communist and capitalist forms of economy and social organization. Even though Russia has now nominally adopted democratic and capitalist structures, Cold War history still colors U.S.-Russian relations.​ World War II Prior to entering World War II, the United States gave the Soviet Union and other countries millions of dollars worth of weapons and other support for their fight against Nazi Germany. The two nations became allies in the liberation of Europe. At wars end, countries occupied by Soviet forces, including a large part of Germany, were dominated by Soviet influence. British Prime Minister  Winston Churchill described this territory as being behind an Iron Curtain. The division provided the framework for the Cold War  which ran from roughly 1947 to 1991. Fall of the Soviet Union In the mid-1980s Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev led a series of reforms known as glasnost and perestroika which eventually brought the dissolution of the Soviet empire into a variety of independent states. In 1991, Boris Yeltsin became the first democratically elected Russian president. The dramatic change led to an overhaul of U.S. foreign and defense policy. The new era of tranquility that ensued also led the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists to set the Doomsday Clock back to 17 minutes to midnight (the farthest away the clocks minute hand has ever been), a sign of stability on the world stage. New Cooperation The end of the Cold War gave the United States and Russia new opportunities to cooperate. Russia took over the permanent seat (with full veto power) previously held by the Soviet Union at the United Nations Security Council. The Cold War had created gridlock in the council, but the new arrangement meant a rebirth in U.N. action. Russia was also invited to join the informal Group of Seven (G-7) gathering of the worlds largest economic powers, making it the G-8. The United States and Russia also found ways to cooperate in securing loose nukes—enriched uranium or other nuclear material on the black market—in former Soviet territory. There is still much to be done on this issue, however.
